It was November 1992, and we had just elected a new president. For the past twelve years, the occupants of the White House had been Republicans, and the President-elect, who had won with less than a majority of the popular vote, was a Democrat. None of my students were old enough to have truly remembered the last time a Democrat had held “the most powerful office in the world.”
