Academy at the Lakes’ Fine Arts Department presented it’s 10th Annual All School Musical on February 20 & 21, 2009. Students in all grades participated in the show and several of our faculty members played in the orchestra. This year’s production, H.M.S. Pinafore, or The Lass that Loved a Sailor, is a comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S. Gilbert. The original show opened at the Opera Comique in London on May 25, 1878 for a run of 571 performances, which was the second longest run of any musical theater piece up to that time. The opera’s gentle satire builds on the familiar theme of love between members of two different social classes. The opera also pokes good-natured fun at the Royal Navy, parliamentary politics, and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority. The lead parts were played by:
Beionny M.: The Right Honorable Sir Joseph Porter
Michael S. Captain Corcoran
Daniel P.: Ralph Rackstraw
Nikhil F.: Bill Bobstay
Jason P.: Dick Deadeye
Shannon O.: Josephine
Katy K.: Cousin Hebe
Abby S.: Mrs. Cripps (aka Buttercup)
