Author in the House!!! The 2nd - 4th Grade students have been listening to “Trouble on the Saint John’s River” during library time with Ms. Szarko. This book on the environment ties in with the 3rd Grade study of Florida animals. The 5th - 6th grade students have been reading another one of her books ”Voices in St. Augustine” during Language Arts class. The book ties in with the Middle Division’s integrated curriculum as well as the traditional 5th Grade class trip to St. Augustine, Florida. Ms. Wood had already signed books purchased prior to her visit…a nice touch! She also has donated a set of her books to the Lower and Middle Division libraries. Ms. Wood has written a series of books about Florida history and interesting places. Our students got a glimpse of her new book to be released in February 2010 called “Ghosts on the Coast: A Visit to Savannah and the Low Country.” To learn more about Ms. Wood, visit her website www.janewoodbooks.com for additional information.

On January 11, 2010, Lower and Middle Division students (2nd – 6th Grades) got a chance to meet Jane R. Wood, an author from Jacksonville, Florida, who has written four children’s books. Ms. Wood visited both campuses during her time at Academy at the Lakes. During her visit, Ms. Wood discussed how she became an author and shared the fact that many of her characters are based on her family members.
