On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 the Middle Division Girls Basketball team won 1st place in the Florida West Coast League Championship. The trophy is proudly displayed in the trophy case in the gym lobby.

This trophy signifies more than just a championship. This was the first year that the Middle Division Girl’s basketball team was combined as one team. The team consisted of girls in the 5th-8th grade. Some girls had more advanced skills and others were just beginning. As the season progressed, communication, skill development and teamwork were challenged. The team continued to work through these challenges and overcame most obstacles. The team that started the season was much different than the end result.

Brenna Walton and Lauren Evans led the team with scoring. Rebecca Hannah brought leadership and communication. Because of our height, speed and strategy the team was unstoppable. We mastered rebounding, fast break, pressing and most of all defense. These elements combined by all members of the team helped us onto victory. Marie-Christine DeRomagna, Jenna Fiore, Hannah Szarko, Tori Emerick, Kaelin Randle, and Elainey Zlotnitsky were great contributors and teammates. The team set goals and they were determined to win. The final score was Academy 19, St. John’s Greek 11.

Congratulations to the Middle Division Girls Basketball team!
