The day after celebrating the first official day of softball practice with new Head coach Diane Stephenson, Academy at the Lakes softball players gathered on Tuesday, Jan. 24 to kick off the new season with an inspirational, educational, informative, and interactive talk with guest speaker Gayle Blevins, retired college softball coach and experienced public speaker.
Blevins was the Head Softball Coach at the University of Iowa for 23 years and is in the National Fastpitch Softball Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame. She is the second Winningest coach in NCAA history with 1245 wins, and is the lead instructor for the master program: Coaching of Softball.
“Gayle Blevins epitomizes a strong female role model,” said Stephenson. “I have considered her my coach, peer, mentor and most importantly my friend for almost 40 years. There isn’t really anything she won’t do to help young people realize their potential.”
The presentation covered important tips and tricks that the student athletes will be able to put to good use during the new season.
Ideas such as understanding why you play, implementing positive self-talk and problem solving, embracing change, playing with purpose, taking responsibility, and acknowledging effort, were demonstrated and discussed during the presentation.
The Varsity Softball Team’s first game is on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7pm at Springstead High School. The Middle Division Softball Team will play their first game on Tuesday, March 8 at 4pm at Berkeley Preparatory School.
