The Advantages of Being a High School Intern

Words by Kenny Quayle ‘16

Internships.

This word usually incites fear, uncertainty, and thoughts of seemingly endless latte runs for the head honchos at some bland office owned by an equally bland company. This type of internship seems to be a pointless exercise of the tortures of adult life in an equally torturous and boring setting, essentially the flax seed of summer activities.

Yet, this is not always the case.

Depending on your interests, contacts, drive, and how you choose your internships, they can be a completely different type of experience. A boring week or so at a boring company can be turned into a rewarding experience, and very possibly not an office bound one.

I, personally, have now participated in 3 internships under 3 different organizations. One under Amazonia expeditions in Peru, one with Panthera Journeys in Arizona, and one with the marketing department here at Academy at the Lakes (hence this article.)

My internships were certainly not of the flax seed variety.

I traveled, worked with animals, experienced extreme environments, and learned valuable skills of nearly every variety. Instead of latte runs, I was hiking through scorching canyons and dense jungles. Instead of making copies, I was writing about my life and experiences and sharing with others.

The constricting tie and slacks uniform was thrown out the window and my business attire ranged from waterproof shirts and hiking boots to casually worn dress shirts and pineapple shorts.

I chose the right internships for me, and you can too.

It is simple, find something fun and interesting to do, find a company that does the thing, and contact them. Do not fear rejection or anything of the like, because for one rejection is a normal part of life and it is important that you learn to handle it appropriately in a professional setting, and it is very likely that they will not say no and will accept or at least consider you.

Forbes has cited high school interns as one of the biggest missed opportunities by companies today. They cite high school interns as being extremely valuable with a different type of company loyalty, different points of view, current and savvy knowledge of both technology and current trends, and a drive to bring whatever they can to the table.

Essentially, high school interns have a more “what can I do for the company” mentality when compared to the college interns who think more along the lines of “what can this company do for me and my career.”

A high school intern also brings in a fresh point of view to many issues, providing obvious solutions often overlooked by older and more seasoned employees and interns.

Any company worth its salt in the modern world also has some sort of social media presence, and knowledge of pop culture trends and modern technology can be useful not only for advertising but for investing and other purposes as well.

That new article of clothing or new phone that is all the rage among teenagers may not be picked up by another company for several months, but with the knowledge of these trends that many high school interns can bring to the business, your company may just be able to jump on that gravy train before it even hits the station.

High school internships are essentially a major opportunity for both the intern and the employer, and the experience can be beneficial for both parties. Every high school student should seek out some sort of internship before college, as to have professional experience and simply because internships can be extremely fun and rewarding.

Just keep your eyes and ears open, and take any opportunity that comes your way, because it may just put you on a path to success.
