Why Academy?
Opportunities abound for students at Academy at the Lakes. Whether it’s in speaking at a Lower Division assembly when it’s your class’ turn to lead, baking a birthday cake with the high school Seniors when you’re in Junior Kindergarten, making a difference for others through your Middle Division participation in community service, performing in the All School Musical, or taking that AP exam in Upper Division, Academy students all have countless opportunities to develop their own particular talents, interests, and voices.
Academy traditions such as House Day and class retreats mesh with forward-looking programs in science and technology, foreign languages, community service, personal finance, and others to create a distinctive and life-changing set of school experiences for every student. Arching over each opportunity and each experience is the canopy of relationships with caring and inspiring teachers, all of whom believe in our mission to “celebrate the love of learning and the joy in the journey.”
Athletics and the arts are essential experiences for all of Academy’s students.
At Academy at the Lakes, competition in interscholastic sports is open to all students in grades 5 through 12. Our “no-cut” policy ensures access for all. We believe that sports belong in schools because they are great endeavors in which to teach life lessons. Our athletic program develops character by teaching more than simply the skills of each sport, but also by teaching about the importance of effort, how to strive for improvement, and, most importantly, how to learn from adversity. Academy students are well-served by the values of our athletic program, and many have gone on to compete in college at the NCAA Division I, II, and III level.
Our fine arts program is also an area of great strength. With outstanding professional instructors leading the way in music, theater, dance, and art, Academy students develop the skills they will need to be successful 21st century citizens and economic actors. Our arts programs teach responsibility, communication, teamwork, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving while providing countless memorable moments.
Since the graduation of the first class of seniors in 2002, Academy at the Lakes has sent its alumni to a range of colleges, including many of the finest colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Our graduates are attractive to colleges and universities because they have had opportunities to lead and discover their true potential through their involvement in the many activities available at the Academy.
The Academy Experience is as rich and diverse as school ought to be. Through its many facets, it helps students build the confidence, poise, and vision that will be their ticket to a life well-lived. The Academy Experience is phenomenal preparation for college and beyond.
