Fourth grade students proudly presented their state projects this week to parents and classmates. Each student spent time in class and at home researching a chosen state. The culminating project allowed students the opportunity to integrate their creativity and technological skills to represent their state’s flag, map, historic timeline, state hero, facts, landmarks, postcard, and brochure. Sharing the significance of several state artifacts and a state food rounded out their dynamic presentations.

Academy 8th grader Christina Rodriguez didn’t know a thing about horses growing up, until her Dad deployed to Afghanistan. Christina’s mom put her in riding lessons...

Academy 8th grader Christina Rodriguez didn’t know a thing about horses growing up, until her Dad deployed to Afghanistan. Christina’s mom put her in riding lessons to keep her busy; never knowing it would ignite a passion for horses that would lead to competitive riding.

The 2012 season was Christina’s first year riding at nationally recognized shows. Her trainer, Jan Uiterwyk, says Christina loves to jump, “She has the natural ability and the determination to go all the way in this sport”. Christina knows it takes a certain mindset to want to jump, “It’s thrilling to fly over a jump. My goal is to make it to Nationals within the next two years”.

That goal seems realistic based on her success so far in both school and jumping. She is an A student at Academy and was the 2012 Reserve Champion for the Central Florida Hunter Jumper(CJHJA) in Low Children Jumpers with her horse “Grasshopper”.

Christina’s mom, Kathleen, credits the flexibility of the teachers’ and staff at Academy to prepare and travel for shows outside of the local area, “They work with us whenever she has to miss a day and they know success away from school means a greater chance of success in school”.

This year, Christina is #1 in the state in her division with her pony “A Lotta Moxie” and she will be busy this summer trying to hold on to that position as she does what she loves best, JUMPING!

Second graders demonstrated communication, creativity, and critical thinking as they kicked off the start of the 2013 baseball season in style

Second graders demonstrated communication, creativity, and critical thinking as they kicked off the start of the 2013 baseball season in style. After Mr. Heller threw out the first pitch, the second graders led the Lower Division in singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Once everyone was in mood for baseball, the second graders each had an opportunity to sing their own personal rendition of this old time favorite song. The children sang their solo with great confidence. Each song reflected the children’s individual creative style and interests.

We spent the day learning all about ocean life. We especially enjoyed dragging the net along the ocean floor as we discovered what lurks just beneath the surface. We discussed the ocean as a habitat. Our children really enjoyed playing with friends at the beach. We will be talking about this trip for a long time to come!

This week, the students in the Middle Division Advanced Technology class demonstrated video games that they designed and developed using Scratch. Scratch is a game development platform developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to teach kids about computer programming.

Each student spent 2 weeks reverse engineering and recreating popular games such as Pong and Brick Breaker before they were given the opportunity to design and build a game of their own design. Students then took turns explaining their game strategy and reviewing their scripts with the class. They then got a chance to play each others games on the interactive touch screen TV in the computer lab.

If you pay a visit to Academy and the kids are playing games, you just might be watching the computer programmers of tomorrow.
