For High School Students
Academy at the Lakes is in its fourth year of offering a one-of-a-kind Introduction to Medicine seminar course for students interested in learning more about the field. The semester-long class, which is offered by application only and is taught by two MDs, meets after school once per week. It offers in-depth look at the medical profession through interactive experience, guest speakers and practical community field trips.
During this seminar, participants learn about the medical profession from the perspective of both a medical student and resident, explore the systems of the human body, learn how to use basic medical tools, and better understand the ethical issues surrounding the profession.
Last year’s capstone experience for this course included a visit to the University of South Florida’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation. Students were able to practice with laparoscopic surgical simulators, view and learn about virtual cadaver technology, and do basic tests on high fidelity human patient simulators.
