Academy Difference: Advisory Program

Hundreds of good old-fashioned, hand-written letters, the kind requiring pen to paper, are en route to Class of 2014 Academy graduates. The letters, written by Upper Division students, will land in New York and Chicago and as far as California.

And while those letters are bringing smiles to our alumni, current Wildcats are also spreading smiles on campus by writing letters during advisory and delivering them to their respective buddies.

Student Retreats Nurture Academy Community

Academy’s retreats began in 1995 and have continued every fall with retreats tailored for the Middle and Upper Divisions. The goals are the same – to set the school culture: a community. Students bond and form friendships. New students and faculty learn about Academy’s culture; returning students and faculty are renewed by it.

Cabaret Night: How Academy Integrates Our Core Curriculum Into Chorus

All singers in Boys’ and Girls’ Chorus participate in a very special end of the year event called Cabaret Night in which the Academy gym is transformed into a dinner theatre atmosphere with tables, elegant décor, spotlights and light refreshments.

“Initially, Cabaret Night took the form of a recital where we had audience members in rows and students performed on stage. The last two years, it has finally developed into the concert event I envisioned years ago, a ‘dinner theatre’ type atmosphere.” Katie explained, “I am thankful to Ms. Michele Cozzolino’s (Academy parent) event planning and Ms. Dorie Burnham’s (Academy’s Business Manager) logistical geniuses for helping me achieve this vision!”

The Academy Difference: House System

Kestrel. Nighthawk. Osprey. Peregrine.

Ask any Academy at the Lakes community member, and they will quickly identify these Florida birds of prey as the school’s four “Houses.”

But did you know that Academy’s Houses could just as easily have been named Feta, Gorgonzola, Muenster and Gouda?

Cheesy, yes. But it’s also true.

Of course, the committee members charged with developing and naming Academy’s Houses were only kidding around when they toyed with the idea of cheese names.
