Reading assignments for Middle Division and Upper Division students by grades are also posted.
These assignments guide the reader to a better understanding of the works, and serve as a basis for discussion in the first days of class. The assignments must be completed by the first day of school.

Academy artists in grades JK through 12 featured their works of art at the annual exhibit. The Art Show Reception was held on Sunday, May 16th from 1pm-3pm. Student artists, families and faculty joined together to view our aspiring artists’ works of art, enjoy refreshments and mingle with the other artists’ and their families.

The Giraffe Club’s final project of the year was to pamper the moms who come to the Pantry each week.

“We thought that giving the moms some items to pamper themselves might help to brighten their day.” The fourth grade students decorated gift bags for the generous items the Academy community contributed.

The Giraffe Club officers, along with Mrs. Szarko, distributed the gift bags on May 5th to all the moms who will came to the Pantry.

“We hope to continue our relationship in the coming school year and assist all the great people who work at the Food Pantry.”

Lower Division News Letter 03/26/10

In second grade social studies we have been studying pioneers and learning about communities of long ago. To culminate our study, we visited the Dade City Pioneer Museum. We visited the old school house, train depot, and general store. We learned about washing clothes, making butter, and the importance of farm animals.

Another trip was to Home Depot to purchase plants for our second grade butterfly garden. We had been studying different soils and were able to learn about the type of soil best suited for growing plants. We also found out which plants were best for attracting different butterflies. We had an enjoyable time planting in our garden.

Visiting Barnes and Noble is always a wonderful trip to take as a class. We enjoyed story time in the children’s section and listened to two stories: The Mitten and The Quiltmaker’s Gift. These great stories helped us learn about the true meaning of giving to others.

In late January we went to the Museum of Science and Industry’s Planetarium to highlight our mini unit on Space. In April we will be going to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center to see Charlotte’s Web, a classic story for second grade children.

Competing for the first time against a field of 22 schools in their division, Academy at the Lakes received second place honors at the most recent Odyssey of the Mind Regional Competition. A team comprised of six children from grades 2 through 4 competed in Discovered Treasures. The students created a skit about an archaeological expedition that took place through several time periods and involved different artifacts and landmarks. In addition to making their own props, the team incorporated dance and song into their skit. The performance garnered one of two second place awards given for their division.

Odyssey of the Mind is an educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students of all ages. Children apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Odyssey of the Mind provides children with benefits that reach beyond the classroom; students learn skills that will last a lifetime. We are thrilled that we can offer our students this valuable learning experience.
