Academy at the Lakes was very pleased to welcome business executive and author Susan Packard to campus on Wednesday, September 14 for a special lunch with our Future Business Leaders of America club and separate chats with the boys and girls in Grades 7-12. Ms. Packard is the author of New Rules of the Game: 10 Strategies for Women in the Workplace (2015). Her visit was made possible by Cheryl and Trustee Jim Emerick (Tori ’15).
Packard is a co-founder of HGTV, media executive, and speaker. She has experience on the ground floor of many popular cable channels such as HBO, CNBC, and The Food Network. She worked her way up the business ladder from consumer research to helping build the $10 billion dollar Scripps Network and now writes, speaks, and shares her insights with women in all stages of life.
Packard shared this extensive knowledge and experience with our students. She spoke about her journey as a child of immigrants to broadening her world through college and travel. She urged our students to study the Liberal Arts and writing, as the skills they build through those pursuits will translate well to careers in business. She spoke about the power of failure and remaining “in the game” rather than retreating to the sidelines. She urged our girls to see their careers as a playing field that will include both wins and losses, and not to take everything too personally. She urged our boys to remain in the game, but also to understand that they need to learn to listen. She urged everyone to be mindful of their organization’s core values and that it’s perfectly fine to leave an enterprise if those core values are not lived or lived up to.
Our teachers and students found value in meeting Ms. Packard, and each of our 11th and 12th Grade girls received a copy of her book courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Emerick.
