Questions to Ask Your Child’s Early Childhood Teacher

For many children, the new school year has just begun. As parents of young children entering their first few years of school, you may have many questions for your child’s new teacher. In some cases, though, you may not even know where to begin! Below we have shared a list of questions you may want to ask your child’s Early Childhood teacher:

  • Is it ok for my child to bring a “lovie” to use during rest time?
  • My child cannot wipe well.  Can you help him/her in the bathroom?
  • What are some great snack ideas for my child?
  • Can parents send in lunches that need to be warmed up?
  • Do the children have access to a fridge?
  • Are the children free to drink water during the school day?
  • Should I apply sunscreen on my child before school?
  • How big should the backpack be?
  • Is my child going to have homework?
  • Can I get a schedule of a typical school day?
  • How many recess breaks will my child have and how long is each recess?
  • What happens if my child does not want to sleep during the rest block? Are there other quiet activities for him/her to do?  How long is rest time?
  • Can parents come into the room for volunteer time?
  • I would love to be a room parent.  How do I get my name on a list?
  • How many parties will the class have throughout the school year?
  • Will the children go on Field trips?  Where?  Can parents attend?
  • How do you handle allergies?
  • What are the classroom discipline program and consequences?
  • What types of performance standards are on the report card?
  • Will my child have a conference day during the school year?
  • How do I best communicate with the teacher?
  • How will you help my shy child make friends and adjust to the school day?
  • Is the playground supervised well by the teacher?  Will my child be outside with older kids?
  • What role will I play at home in the reading process?  Support or teacher role?

Orientation days and parent nights are fantastic opportunities for you to ask all of your questions as you and your child get familiarized with the school and faculty.
