Signature Experiences

Our Signature Experiences Make Us Stand Out

Academy at the Lakes offers educational programs unique to schools in the Tampa area, including an internship in the Amazon, a House System, and an All-School Musical. Learn more about the Academy Experience and our signature programs below.

Kestrel. Nighthawk. Osprey. Peregrine.

House System

Ask any Academy at the Lakes community member, and they will quickly identify these Florida birds of prey as the school’s four “Houses.” The House System places all students and teachers into one of four Houses. Through the House System, a variety of community-building activities have become traditions at Academy, including House Day, spirit events, and Buddy Reading. Through these activities, relationships develop between students of all divisions and ages.

At the end of each school year, the House Cup is awarded to the team that accumulates the most points in the various spirit, academic, and field day events held throughout the year.

World Travel (Ecotourism)

Expanding global perspectives through immersive cultural experiences.

Through programs the school has developed with Amazonia Adventures, educational trips are available to students and families to the Amazon, The Great Migration in Africa, and the Galapagos Islands. It really is about the joy in the journey at Academy at the Lakes – even if that journey takes students thousands of miles away from campus. Educational travel opportunities are an Academy tradition, and the trips provide students with opportunities to learn, face challenges, and have fun outside of a traditional classroom setting.

Amazon Adventure & Internship

Each summer, our students and families are invited to journey deep into the heart of the Amazon basin for the adventure of a lifetime.

High-school aged students may travel with faculty chaperones, or families with younger students may join Academy’s Amazonia Expeditions group for this week-long trip to the Tahuayo Lodge and Research Center in Peru. Amazonia Expeditions, the lodge, and research center are owned and operated by an Academy alumni family.

The school also offers one high school student a month-long research internship at the lodge and research center; interns are chosen through an application process.

Medicine Seminar

Hands-on learning that preps your child for their future.

The Introduction to Medicine Seminar provides interested students with an opportunity to explore the medical field through hands-on experiences and guided instruction from medical professionals in the community. Students who participate in this program are selected through an application process and demonstrate high levels of interest and commitment to pursuing a medical career in the future.

Public Speaking

We create opportunities for all students to become confident speakers and presenters.

Communication is one of our Core Curriculum areas and we begin with our youngest students.

Academy at the Lakes taught me the power of speaking up for myself. They encourage you to be your own advocate—to ask for what you want in life and to work hard to achieve it. Through the public speaking program and the genuine care shown by the teachers, the school fostered an environment where I felt safe, heard, and comfortable becoming the person I was always meant to be. Academy at the Lakes isn’t just a school—it’s a place that nurtures young individuals to become their best selves.

All-School Musical

Academy students shine through our musical theater, drama, and public speaking opportunities.

Being on stage gives students the chance to boost their confidence and hone their communication skills. Opportunities to sing, dance, and act begin in our Lower Division and continue all the way through Senior year.
In addition to a variety of age-appropriate small- and mid-scale productions, Academy stages a full-scale K–12 musical each year at a professional theater. Students take great pride in participating for 13 consecutive years, forming lasting bonds across grade levels through this unique aspect of our culture.
