Here is a glimpse at Life at the Lakes in December.
Galapagos Island Trip
At Academy at the Lakes, we believe adventure is an essential part of learning. Recently, a small group of families embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Galápagos Islands, where they swam alongside sharks and sea lions, observed rare birds and lizards, and explored mysterious caves — experiencing the breathtaking wildlife and natural wonders firsthand.

Faculty Concert – Handel’s Messiah
We highlighted members of our talented faculty who brought Handel’s Messiah to life.
Led by Head of School Mark Heller on cello, the all-star ensemble featured Katherine Vargas (Soprano), Judy Kent (Soprano), Zachary Moore ’18 (Bass), Joseph Bradley (Violin), Frances Pisacane (Violin), Steven McColley (Harpsichord), and Katie Erin McCormick ’20 (Timpani).
Watching our educators perform was a wonderful reminder of the creativity and care they bring to the classroom every day.
Mindfulness Day
Just before midterms, our Wildcats took a much-needed mindfulness break as the semester approached its busy close.
Students enjoyed a variety of activities, from spending time with therapy dogs and relaxing in the library to singing karaoke, playing outdoor games, and creating bead projects. The day was a wonderful reminder of the importance of wellness, balance, and joy in our Academy community.
Winter Concerts
The musical talents of our Academy students were on full display during this year’s Winter Concerts. Our 7th–12th Grader students kicked off the celebrations with an evening performance featuring holiday favorites, classical pieces, and pop hits. From stunning vocal solos to impressive instrumental selections, the night celebrated our students’ dedication to the arts.
The following day, Lower Division students joined the 5th and 6th Grade for their own festive performance. They delighted the audience with holiday tunes and showcased the progress they have made on their instruments throughout the year. Their hard work, practice, and passion truly shined.

Hatchet Day
After reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, our 4th Grade headed to the MacManus Campus to put their survival skills to the test. From building fires and purifying water to constructing shelters, they demonstrated perseverance, teamwork, and ingenuity.
The MacManus Campus gives students the chance to explore the outdoors, connect with nature, and engage in immersive learning. The day brought the story off the page and into real life, showing that some of the greatest learning happens beyond the classroom walls.
Alumni Weekend
We were thrilled to welcome so many graduates back for Alumni Weekend, filled with connection, celebration, and nostalgia. From the Alumni Social at Florida Avenue Brewing to the spirited Alumni Basketball Game, the weekend was full of laughter, hugs, and Wildcat pride. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

Holiday Singalong
Before Winter Break, our Lower Division students spread holiday cheer with a joyful singalong. From Christmas classics to the playful 12 Days of Christmas (Florida edition), our youngest performers stole the show. A big thank-you to their teachers for making the performance sparkle!

Lower Division Fun Run
Our Lower Division students didn’t just head into Winter Break—they hit the ground running! Dressed in House gear, they raced for House points, school pride, and the cheers of family and friends.
The excitement continued as parents and loved ones joined the final race of each session, showing that school spirit knows no age. With medals earned, hugs and smiles shared, and snow cones enjoyed, it was the perfect way to kick off a well-deserved break.
